The ULTIMATE Guitar Practice Routine

Just show up every day, and I'll tell you what to play!

Tony Polecastro here, and today we’re going to look at a finger-style lick in the key of G. I call this kind of like a G-Vamp, because this is just an interesting thing to do over a G Chord when you’re playing finger style.

Over a three-finger G Chord, what we’re going to do is basically start off with a pinch, pinching the Low E and the High E strings against one another. We’re going to very quickly follow that up by lifting up our pinkie and hitting the open High E. We’re going to continue this kind of descending pattern over an alternating finger-picking pattern and we’re going to get this very cool kind of bluesy, descending thing over just a regular G Chord. As I said before, this is one of the coolest things you can do to add interest to maybe a long couple measures of G where you’re like, “Gosh, what am I going to do?”

So think Third Fret on this, because the pinkie’s going to go:

Third Fret Open on the High E,

Third Fret Open on the B, and then ultimately the

Third Fret on the G.

Third Fret is your mantra. We’re going to have a look at this finger-picking riff right now.
