Why I'm Here

I purchased my first guitar (the cheapest I could find in the Tottenham Court Road music shops) when I was 17 years old. I learnt to strum a few chords. Was proud of my passable rendition of Greensleeves and House of the Rising Sun. After six months the guitar was left leaning against the wall. It stayed there for the next 30 years. Fully accepting I had turned my once musical instrument into a piece of object d’art I eventually released it from it’s misery by giving it away to younger curious hands.

For my 53rd birthday I decided to pick up where I had left off and complete my endeavors to master the multi stringed instrument that I had shamefully neglected 36 years earlier.  My second guitar purchase, an acoustic, was delivered a day before my birthday. To my surprise, 36 years without touching a fret board, my fingers somehow still remembered how to form a C, F and G chord. Alas, Greensleeves was nowhere to be found.

I bought my first electric four months later and have been studiously practicing and learning as much as my sore fingertips will permit. After nearly 18 months of constant practice it is only the wise head on my wife’s shoulders that has stopped me from purchasing at least two more guitars.

I have found the secret to consistent practice is to purchase a guitar stand for each of my instruments.  Guitars are much harder to ignore when in the middle of the room and not leaning against a wall.
