The ULTIMATE Guitar Practice Routine

Just show up every day, and I'll tell you what to play!

The TAC Spotlight is a weekly focus on members of Tony’s Acoustic Challenge who have posted at least one performance on the forums and are especially active in the community by showing exemplary support or inspiration for other TAC members. All TAC Spotlight featured members are nominated by other TAC members.

If you’d like to nominate someone to be honored with a TAC Spotlight feature, please submit your nominee here.

Say hi to David W.!

Leicestershire, UK.

# of years played

Well over 30…

Favorite 3 Bands:

Varies but John Martyn, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin (and now Robert Plant) are always in the mix.

How many guitars do you currently own?

I own four acoustic guitars and one electric.

Why is it important for you to improve at guitar?

It is one of the things that I most enjoy – I find it very relaxing.  I like to learn new tunes and getting better at the guitar means that I can play a wider range of new tunes.  I like to sing (I was in choirs at school) and I started to play the guitar principally as an accompaniment to singing.  When I first started to play I worked through the Beatles Complete song book – you know, the one with the psychedelic pictures and the chord boxes.  As the years rolled by I played the guitar more and sang less – that is something that I am also aiming to change!

Why are you an active TAC member?

I know it has been said before but the TAC community is so supportive!  It is so good to be able to talk with other people who really like guitars, everyone getting a kick out of achieving their own goals with the instrument and sharing in each other’s personal triumphs.  The encouragement is second to none – I have practiced more and practiced more regularly since participating in TAC than I had since first starting to play (I have never taken lessons before).  I can see and hear the progress I am making.  Your good lessons, Tony, and the community make that happen.

What convinced you to submit your first performance video?

I was very apprehensive about playing in front of anyone.  Still am.  Seeing the contributions of other members and encouragement from some very kind and very active TAC members (they know who they are!) convinced me to take the plunge.  Since then I have submitted dozens of videos and have become more relaxed about doing it.  I am hoping that this process will lead me to my 2016 open mic goal!

Tell us the story of your first open mic…

I have yet to write that story!  One of my ambitions is to perform at an open mic event and I am planning to reach that goal in 2016.  I will let you know when I have done it.

What else would be cool for people to know about you?

I would like to write songs (There! I’ve said it out loud).  I have written lyrics but have never fashioned tunes that I have been satisfied with.  I am finding the Wednesday solos challenging and enjoyable and I think that they are helping me to unlock some creativity in the friendly environment that is TAC.  You never know – maybe 2016 will see me perform one of my own songs at an open mic!

Senna and Nigel Mancell, schue was amazing to, my favourite
    was Prost.
It was good when the BBC covered the sport, Not so easy to see
races now, the same with MotoGp I enjoye watching that
Rossi is amazing to see even now that he is quite old for racing
    like he used to.

Hi Leslie – I’m no good at football at all but it is good that Leicester are doing so well at the moment. I do follow F1 and I am looking forward to the start of this year’s first Grand Prix, though.

Well done, David. I’m curious about that slotted headstock guitar-what is it?

Hi James – the slotted headstock guitar in the picture above is a Martin 00015-SM. It is all mahogany with 12 frets to the point where the neck joins the body and a 1.75″ nut. It has a great “woody” sound and is comfortable to play.

Thanks everyone, you are all very kind and encouraging as always! I was bowled over by your reaction to Desperado – thank you again. I am working up to the Open Mic – saying it out loud kind of makes it formal so there’s no backing out now… 🙂

Hi David. Enjoyed reading your bio. Your Desperado post inspired me to learn this tune. I’m not an Eagles fan but that song sure sounded good the way you played it.

Hi David. Congratulations on your well deserved spotlight. I have enjoyed your videos these past months and particularly enjoy the open mic type performances that you do for us. Your story is inspiring and we look forward to joining you in your quests for singing and playing at your first open mic in front of a live audience. Great performances from a budding artist!

You have come a long way David, both in the skills I’ve seen you acquire, and in your ability to play for us, your audience. Love the open mic goal! I think you might find it easier if you can find a local guitar/singing buddy to join you on stage.

Hey David: congrats, great spotlight. You have been an integral part of my progress here at TAC and really glad you are here participating in the community. Your tremendous progress inspires me for sure. I saw in the comments that you did Desperado. I missed it and will go back and look for it. I am working on it myself. I felt like an era had come to a close and it made me nostalgic and wanting to play this classic song/ kinda make it apart of me by learning it.

David, Congratulations on your spotlight selection. I always look forward to your postings. Noticed you mentioned songwriting and open mic as 2016 goals, great! Jump in the waters fine, the two goals can be combine into one, and by listening to your playing I’m confident you have the chops to be successful at both.
