The ULTIMATE Guitar Practice Routine

Just show up every day, and I'll tell you what to play!

# of Years Played

Favorite three bands

  • The Beatles
  • The Eagles
  • James Taylor
  • AKUS
  • SO I can’t count, sue me.

How many guitars do you currently own?

8 Acoustics, 5 electrics

Why is it important for you to improve at guitar?

It’s what I want.  It always has been.  Now I WILL make it happen.

Why are you an active TAC member?

I can’t think of a better place to be to learn, have fun, make new music-minded international friends, and entertain people with my songs (even if they sometimes are just being kind).

What convinced you to submit your first performance video?

I will try to make it a short story.  Yeah right.  I was/am in many Facebook groups that are music-related.  There are a variety of folks on there, some nice, some snooty, some arrogant, and some just trying to talk about music, like me.  I befriended a guy named Mark.  His brain is a machine when it comes to writing songs.  He plays pretty well, rock oriented mostly, but he is self-admittedly not a good singer.  Sometimes he actually finds a song that has a range his voice is suited for and it sounds great.  I admired him for months because he was doing what I was afraid to do.  Play for other people, even though it was ‘just video’ and just for strangers’, people can be mean, and you are totally exposing yourself.  What a cool guy.  After a lot of talks with him, I put out my first video on Facebook.  It was an instrumental version of Norwegian Wood, with a rhythm backing track.  I eventually posted it on TAC too.  When I hit record, I was scared to death.  When I clicked SUBMIT to put it on Facebook, I was physically ill.  The something weird and totally unexpected happened.  I started to feel a weight lifted, even before people started to comment.  It was all good stuff they were posting too.  I had moved forward and wanted to never look back.

What else would be cool for people to know about you?

I am totally family-oriented.  Nothing in this short life, or on this crazy rock we call home is more important to sustain than family.  Without it, we all die as a society.  We should all try to be family, like what TAC has brought to us.  Do you have ANY idea how many lives you guys have changed for the better?  People who don’t feel good about themselves, or do feel ok about themselves in general, but are crushed by how bad THEY think they play.  These folks, all of us, now have another purpose in life, and in turn, it makes us feel better about ourselves.  Like a person depressed by their weight, who find a way to actually lose weight the right way and keep it off, and have great blood work results, and generally feel better, the by-product of these things is that it changes our whole approach to life.  Kinder gentler people are those that have some sort of a sense of pride and fulfillment in their lives.  It trickles down or has a booming impact on others.  So, I am saying TAC is changing the world.

AND I DO cry watching touching scene in a movie, especially regarding a spouse, or an animal.  Why does the dog always have to die?

I am a huge advocate for animals and giving them homes. Please rescue a pet today.

Holy Cow I never read down the page. I didn’t know we could comment. Ditto everything said and I look forward to shaking your hand and thanking you personally for grabbing my hand and pulling me aboard the TAC-land train to music heaven. You (and gotta mention Mark here too) got me going, and inspired me to reach out beyond myself. Ever grateful!

Thanx buddy. I only help people to go further than they would go themselves because I am scared to death to be doing it alone. I’m not doing it for you. I’m all about me, me, me. Got you all fooled. HAHAHAHAHA! 😉
There’s my wife shaking her head at me again. Seriously though, I was talking about Mark. There I go again. Somebody stop me. I kill me.
If the East Coast ever happens to be a stop for you in life, we WILL get together my friend.

Thanx Jorge. It’s obvious to me that at least the majority of TACers have the same belief system in them as I do. We’re all about each others progress and successes.

    Hi Dom,
Thanks for sharing on the “spotlight.” It is interesting that I have had the same feeling about Tony and TAC, that warm-hearted people who share their passion are really what this world needs right now!

I live in Wisconsin, and for the past 4 years our state government has become so oppressive. While politics is still a taboo subject for most people, it has become for us a gnawing reality, an oppressive one at that. Scott Walker has made our lives increasingly “undemocratic, ” for 4 years running, and there seems to be no “higher authority” coming to our rescue. We”re talking in-your-face corruption, State Supreme Court Judges refusing to recuse themselves from cases involving those who have bankrolled their election; laws made to satisfy polluting-factory-owners (the likes of the Koch brothers), while things you come to expect in America (like public education, basic infrastructure, etc.) are allowed to wither with minimal funding. It is so extreme that my own relative from NY state think I’m exaggerating! Our governor (I use a small “g” on purpose here) HATES educators, and who could have ever imagined that!!! My husband and I are both Professors/teachers, so our profession has been the brunt of a lot of cuts and barbs. In any case, I digress (and I apologize for that),

I am motivated to write a song, something of a “protest song” of the ’60’s, more in the spirit of uplifting neighbors than in complaining. I was touched by your shared interest in singing; I too am not very at home with my singing voice, ever since I was a kid. But, I’d like to believe that everybody has the capacity to express themselves in song, in a way that embodies their personality, their authenticity. I think of Bob Dylan, whose poetry is so powerful, and whose voice is, indeed, expressive and one of a kind.

I have been away from TAC for a few months, and am looking forward to more practicing and community discussions!

Mary Elizabeth. On politics, I’ll be brief here. The g of your state was a joke in the last debate, IMHO. The people in power have us right where they want us. They know well how to use the age-old tactic of “divide and conquer”. They have done that well. How can we unite for the common good of getting America back to being America that I grew up in while they have us fighting and hating each other. It matters not what party either, or skin color. Those in power do nothing to fix anything.
So, musically, we need more Bob Dylan style musicians. They do exist. I am not usually political in my songs but rather I concentrate on my message being one FOR the listener. Be happy, if not, get happy. If there is something in your life that is bad, get rid of it. WE have the power. If a neighbor or an animal is being wronged, DO something about it. WE fix things, we always did. Even in the fifties and sixties, it wasn’t government that fixed anything, it was you or your neighbor or Dad or Aunt or friend. My songs don’t complain as much as they try to lift. When enough of us are ‘lifted’, the wrong doing will become so less prevalent. Fix from with in, feel the power . It’s the way to go.

There is a lot of talent out here, and, as most folks know by now, I feel you are our brightest star in the entire TAC Quadrant. I am so proud of the leaps of faith you have allowed me to nudge you into. Look at you now. 😉

Dom, way to go. you are a strong encourager for everyone one at TAC. I think you symbolize the TAC community, so it’s a great choice for you to lead as the first Featured Member.

Trace, buddy. Sorry no Foo Fighters. Let’s say they are #6 and then Them Crooked Vultures could be #7. Feel better now??? 😉
You are already like me. I am not sure it’s safe out there since I now know there are two of me!

I must say that I echo everyone’s words here. You are a great inspiration to all; from the videos you post to the kind comments that you make. Thank you for being here and thank you for constantly encouraging everyone. You are a trailblazer through the fields of fear on the way to TACland 🙂 I had to use your term there, I love it. Sincere thank you Dom keep up the awesome work!!!

One thing you must remember while we’re all “oh Dom, you are so great”. YOU had the original idea called Tony’s Acoustic Challenge. Then I came along and added to the passion YOU started. Now others are creating new passions onboard the TACland Train to Music Heaven. It’s what it’s all about, paying it forward. As a wise and famous country song says “may the circle be unbroken”.

WOW! I AM really smart! 😉

Dom, who in the world is AKUS? You peaked my curiosity, now I have to look it up, hope I’m not missing out on something, I should be practicing instead.

Great to know you even better. You’re so encouraging and supportive to all. You’re a big part of why I like TAC so much. It’s a family. And love to know you’ve got a sensitive side, but figured that out when I heard the song you wrote for your wife. I’m also into animals, and a rescue advocate. I’ve got 3 meezers through Siamese Rescue.

Again, this experience is humbling. Sure, I love the attention, but I don’t understand it.
I am a huge softy for animals. We have three rescues. After my Golden (Beau) died of a rare disease, I couldn’t replace him. Four years later, a really really sick 5-week old kitten was placed into my hands. She is now our Princess, and a gorgeous green-eyed beauty found in a picture or two of some guitar shots and videos. In honor of Beau, her name is Scarlett.
Then a rescue dog pops into my lap one day. She’s scared and meek. She is my precious Pippa, and she is beautiful. My wife thought one day that Pippa looked lonely, so we called a friend who does rescue work, and we now have KayDee (KD stands for Krazy Dog). I hated her for weeks (she is too pigheaded). Then one day fell in love with her. She is my best four-legged friend, waking me with kisses every single day.

I tell people that when you take home a rescue pet, you just saves TWO lives. The one you took home, and the one that now has a place to stay until they find their forever home.

Great to hear your story Dom. Nothing wrong with having a sensitive side – I can relate to the emotions around family related scenes. Could be an age thing 🙂
One of these days I may be brave enough to post as you did. I suspect it will be somewhat liberating, but fear is stronger at the moment 🙂 Happy playing!

      Thanx Kirby.
Please believe me when I say this:
FEAR is NOT stronger! FEAR is the devil. FEAR is the evil that doesn’t want us to ever be all we can be.
YOU are stronger than FEAR, but FEAR doesn’t want you to know it, and will stiffel everything within you to stop you.
When you say “I may be brave enough”, say I AM brave enough. Go right now, grab a guitar, turn on a camera. Then just PLAY PLAY PLAY. The weight will be removed. I don’t care if you mess up every chord. Post it. Tell us you messed it all up but wanted us to see you standing tall. You’ll never look back!

      Hi Darleen,
Out there on the ‘other coast’ with Jeff S, right?
I am overwhelmed most times when someone likes what I do. I don’t think I will ever get over it either. I just do what I do, and play what I play. I am me. Everyone should be just who they know they really are.
If I inspire people, then I feel great about that. I just don’t get why a goofy guy from Philly inspires people. Let’s just let our music ring out to the world. Maybe all the bad guys will wither away, and we can ALL make cool music together. 😉

Thanks buddy. The biggest secret in TACland (I just coined that phrase this morning, and I like it!), is that ALL of YOU are MY inspiration. I do things consciously or otherwise, because one of you does something.
You are so busy at work, but when you get the chance, it amazes me what you can do. And maybe the masses here don’t know yet, but you are a bit of a whack-ball yourself. 😉
Can’t wait to get together in a couple weeks for what could be our first annual Pocono Campfire Jam. YeeeeeeHaaaaaa!

    Hi Dom
+1 to Carol and Mark’s comments. You are always helpful and encouraging to new joiners and that was certainly helpful to me when I first dipped my toe in the water just a few weeks ago. By the way, I like your own songs too! 🙂

Thanx Dave. I don’t know where they come from. I wake up in the middle of the night with a tune and words, or one or the other. If I don’t get up right away and record what’s in my head I will lose it in the morning (learned the hard way). Sometimes I think my stuff is goofy. Sometimes I actually really DO like them.
Now that your toe has been dipped, it’s time for a “CANNONBALL!!!!”.
Show us whatcha got. We want it.
The big secret in TACland? We all WANT to see videos from EVERYBODY. We don’t CARE how good or bad it is. Actually there is no such thing in TACland, just musicians trying to be better than yesterday.

Way to go Dom! I am glad you got to go first here, what a ground breaker you are! You have always been such an inspiration and source of encouragement to me- I really look up to you as a guitar player role model.
It was cool to read your interview here! I really like this idea of having a member spotlight, I think it will help us get to know everybody better!

      Carol, thanx.
The first time I watched you play I was stunned & amazed. In rock language I could say “Dazed and Confused”. I believe you said you had been playing for about 22 months? I love what you do and how you do it.
It blows me away how talented some folks are in such a short time.
BTW, I sent the Pocono Campfire direction to you in a Private Message. Can’t wait for us to all be playing together soon!

I can only add to all of these great comments that without all of your hard work and encouaging comments and great postings, this group would not be the great place for ” Budding” muscians to be. You are an awesome inspiration.

        Thank you Donald.
I am starting to wonder if I should be afraid. If I am inspiring so many people, then you are all going to turn into lunatics like me 😉
And we can all hang out on the grass (Pink Floyd joke).
Show us your ‘bud’ and play us a song. As your “Inspiration Master”, I demand it. Hahahaha
