The ULTIMATE Guitar Practice Routine

Just show up every day, and I'll tell you what to play!

The TAC Spotlight is a weekly focus on members of Tony’s Acoustic Challenge who have posted at least one performance on the forums and are especially active in the community by showing exemplary support or inspiration for other TAC members. All TAC Spotlight featured members are nominated by other TAC members.

If you’d like to nominate someone to be honored with a TAC Spotlight feature, please submit your nominee here.

Say hi to Simon T.!

Nottingham,England,(robin hood country!)

 # of years played

I started aged about 15,and played up until about 2000,then stopped, band broke up,lost interest, barely played a note until about 4 years ago.

Favorite 3 Bands:

Tough one this!

I would have to say,

Big country(who?you say?!)Scottish band,big in the eighties,Stuart adamson,lead guitarist,was my main inspiration for picking up a guitar

The Beatles

Led Zeppelin

Beach boys and van halen come pretty close.(quite a contrast there eh!!)I was a bit of a “hair”metal fan in the late 80s/90s,motley crue, guns & roses and all that, although I was as much attracted to the lifestyle as the music!ha!!

How many guitars do you currently own?

3,a 1970s Les Paul,my om-21,and a fender cp-100 parlour guitar.

Have owned stratocasters and telecasters that i never should have sold as well!

Why is it important for you to improve at guitar?

I just love playing,I’d like for my son to maybe try his hand at an instrument one day, would be cool to share a common interest.

Why are you an active TAC member?

I Enjoy the forums immensely, and watching people improve,I know my own progress been helped along massively with this website,I love the finger exercises!you are very creative with those Tony! TAC has been a fantastic source of learning and inspiration for me,it has introduced me to some wonderful acoustic artists I would never have found otherwise. I like the focused practice plan, keeps the interest up. So many online lessons and such its very easy to be overwhelmed if you’re just starting out.Tac is all you need!

What convinced you to submit your first performance video?

I think the performance videos are a great way at keeping your interest up in the site, and getting feedback from other guitarists, and providing encouragement to others.

Tell us the story of your first open mic?

Open mics are not that common in the uk,and have never done one.But I was in a band from 1996 to 1999,playing electric guitar, all our own material, and did about 70-80 gigs up and down the country, which was great fun.

What’s the one thing you’d tell other TAC members who don’t think they’d be good at writing songs?

Never written my own songs, but have co-written a few when I with the band, I’ve actually just got together with the songwriter (a good friend as well)again over the last couple of months and are hoping to do a bit of an open mic type acoustic memorial gig for a friend who sadly passed away last year.

What else would be cool for people to know about you?

The Les Paul that is on my profile picture is a 1974 or 1975 gold top deluxe.I spotted it about 23 years ago in my local music store propped up behind the counter.i asked the guy if it was for sale,he said”oh,that’s some old battered Les Paul that needs a repair to the headstock and a refret,£250 and its yours!Bargain I thought,I took up the offer and had it repaired,it’s a beauty,a bit battered and no where near its original state, the mini humbuckers were removed unfortunately and normal ones put in,the only original thing left on it is the body and neck!!ive had to replace everything else, electrics, machine heads the lot, still sounds great though, and is actually signed on the  back by my hero Stuart adamson!so is kind of priceless really!

Enjoyed your spotlight. You made me aware of how players with a lot of experience still find good value in TAC and it’s not just for the lessons but the community of support. That alone is motivational as are stories like yours. Thanks for sharing and motivating!

Simon, dig learning a bit more about you, and I love the story of your LP. And to prove you were not the only one listening:
    “In a big country
    dreams stay with you
    like a lover’s voice
    cross the mountain side…”
I think The Crossing was the only album I had from them, but I played it a lot.

Nice one, Simon!! Congrats on the spotlight. I remember Big Country. I liked them, too. And your other selections. Sounds like we are from a common era. Cheers!!!!

Simon, Congratulation on your Spotlight selection. Great interview! Your favorite bands aren’t “that obscure” for all of us on the western side of the pond. Cool story about the Les Paul, sounds like you’ve acquired a life time friend. I’d say your band life was successful, especially for an all original unit. If you’ve co-written a song YOU ARE A SONGWRITER (legally and socially among any songwriter I’ve ever encountered)! I think anyone who has played guitar for any amount of time has a minimum of one regret story about the one they shouldn’t have sold. Best of luck with your future and I look for to seeing more of your posts / videos.

Hi Steve,Stuart was a big,big hero of mine,I actually got backstage once and met him,at a festival at Wollaton park in Nottingham,my dad was a sparky for the council and was checking the electrics for the gig,he managed to get me a couple of backstage passes!
I was totally star struck and I’ve got no recollection of what I said to him,but there was no real conversation going on!i did get to have a little go on his telecaster though,I remember the action was really, really high, couldn’t play a note cleanly on it!!

Congrats on the spotlight Simon! You must love travelling, having played all over in the band and now riding the rails for a living!
Thanks for the reminders about Stuart Adamson and hair metal- takes me back to the 80’s. As they say here, “Rad!”.

Hey guys!its great to be here, thanks for all the comments,Been a bit quiet on the site lately,my lovely wife has agreed to let me have the spare room for my guitars!!yay!which makes it easier to set up all my electric gear, and so I’ve been putting all my time into that.I’ve recently purchased a telecaster too,so that’s what I’ve been playing mostly.
Anyway,it really is great to be here, amongst such friendly guitar folks!!

Congratulations Simon, I’ve always wondered how people acquire those old Les Pauls without paying through the roof for them. Glad you are here at TAC.

Hey, Simon. I have heard of Big Country! Nice spotlight. I am a big fan of the warm ups, too. They can get rather hypnotic. Keep up the playing!
