Say hi to Taylor P.!

Coleman, Texas

 # of years played

15 years but I took a seven year hiatus until last January when I was asked to give lessons to junior high kids after school.

Favorite 3 Bands:

Obviously there are a ton but the guys I have grown up with and still listen to a lot are Robert Earl Keen, Willie Nelson, and Dave Matthews, I know it’s a strange trio.

How many guitars do you currently own?

I have a Takamine that isn’t my favorite sounding guitar but I bought it off of Rick Sikes, who was Willie Nelson’s original guitar player. I will always cherish the memories of sitting in his little shop and listening to him talk about playing with Willie, Cash, Merle, and opening for Elvis. It wasn’t one of his go to guitars but it makes the guitar a lot cooler just to have been owned by a guy like that.  Since joining TAC I have developed a serious case of GAS and have added a GS Mini Mahogany and a Martin D-16GT.

Why is it important for you to improve at guitar?

When I first started playing again it was about getting better so the students couldn’t tell that I was a terrible player. Now that I have a few months back playing it has more to do with just enjoying guitar again. I feel really accomplished when I nail down a new song, or a difficult lesson.

Why are you an active TAC member?

I really enjoy watching the performances and seeing what other think about my performances. The close community and all of the positive feedback really inspires me to get on every day.

What convinced you to submit your first performance video?

I’ve always been shy about playing solo around others, so I was pretty hesitant to the idea at first. After watching a bunch of performances and seeing all of the positive feedback, I thought this would be the perfect place to start.

Tell us the story of your first Open Mic?

I’ve never played open mic, but my first show consisted of me and one other guy playing Sweater Song by Weezer for 20 minutes in a skating rink, I’m sure it was terrible.

What else would be cool for people to know about you?

I’m a Junior High Social Studies teacher and I lived in South Korea for 3 years.

Recognize! Nice to know you Taylor, thank you for sharing your story with us. Hopefully watching Tony’s lessons is also having an impact on how you teach your junior high students on to play.

Great story, I also have a Tak that was given to me by my best friend. Not a great guitar but the sentimental value is greater then money. A while back we tried to talk another friend into beginning playing. I offered to give him the Tak if he would. He until now has declined. Hopefully some day he’ll jump in and the Tak will carry on.

Congratulations Taylor. great spotlight. I have always viewed GAS as a detractor but as I was reading your spotlight for the first time I realized that many of us here at TAC have GAS and for the first time I think I am owning it. In fact I am admitting I enjoy it. My new motto “I HAVE GAS AND I HAVE THE GUITARSENAL TO PROVE IT.” Thanks for helping me to see clearly!

Interesting read. Awesome story on the guitar you bought from Rick Sikes. That would be so much more fun to play knowing the guitars history.

Hey Taylor. Glad you picked up the guitar again and joined up on TAC. Your Martin sounds great, and the picking is always excellent! Keep at it, you’ve gotta stay a few steps ahead of those students…
