For those about to TAC… I salute you!
Howdy all! Here is my current routine
1.) How many days per week do you play?
I can truthfully say that I play everyday, but if I am being honest some of that playing is more akin to Sherlock Holmes and his violin: mindless noodling while I think about work issues or to just deal with work related stress. As far as practicing, I do two short sessions 5 days a week (Monday through Friday). Sometimes if I feel up to it, I will play a longer “review” type session on Saturday or Sunday.
2.) What time of day do you play?
I play a short session early in the morning (currently practicing songs from the old Song Vault and a Fretboard Wizard Lesson). After work I do a second short session focused on technique such as alternate picking or speed picking. I will confess that this later session may involve time with my acoustic guitar’s younger “electrified” brother.
3.) Where do you play?
I sometimes play in my bedroom in the morning, but most of the time I end up playing in my basement, which serves many purposes such as my COVID-Home Office, Guitar Practice Room, Kid’s Play Area, and Couch-Fort Stronghold. I have created a tiny space that somewhat resembles what a real guitar room might look like.
4.) How has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
– First, dedicated practice on a daily basis (as opposed to simple noodling) as resulted in measurable improvements in my technique and understanding of guitar theory. A few minutes a day adds up quickly.
– Second, daily dedicated practice has given me increased momentum to practice the next day. Practice is not habit for me, but I find that I hate breaking a practice streak. When I do break a practice streak, my prior streak and successes makes it easier to commit to getting the streak going again.
– Finally, I am less stressed. I have found that spending a few minutes of me time each day playing the guitar really helps me let go of the daily stress that I carry around.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
A heater or firewood. I just moved into my house in October, and so far it is always freezing. Before you ask, when not in use, my guitars live in warmer and more temperature-consistent area of the house where they are cozy and properly humidified. 😇
Here is a picture of my square of paradise. Pictured is my resonator “Tim,” who is keeping me company today. Ignore the non-acoustic guitar paraphernalia.
