Wes K, How I TAC
1.) How many days per week do you play?
I consistently play at least 5 days per week. Practice on weekdays (work days) tends to be shorter, sometimes 10 or 15 minutes to do the TAC daily lesson; sessions on weekends tend to be longer and that is when I work on material that is outside of TAC.
2.) What time of day do you play?
On weekdays, my guitar practice happens soon after dinner in the evening, about 7pm. I usually play earlier in the day on weekends. [I am looking forward to retirement, when I have weekend flexibility 7 days per week!]
3.) Where do you play?
I have arranged an area in our basement for my music stuff [I have been learning piano via Playground Sessions software for the last 3 years, which is why I am sitting at the keyboard holding my guitar in the picture below!]. Having this area always set up makes it easy to practice.
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
I had been away from guitar completely for a few years before I picked it up again to chord through some songs for a song circle (group singing) that started in the Fall of 2019. Just strumming campfire chords to accompany the singing was my only goal. Since joining TAC in 2020, the daily lessons, song vault and performances by TAC members has re-kindled my motivation to develop other techniques. I would say that participating in TAC and having a consistent guitar routine has helped me by:
– being open to learning new things. A lot of the TAC daily lessons cover things that I just would not think to try on my own. The lessons are small enough that I can learn new things without being overwhelmed.
– My reading of TAB has improved greatly since joining TAC. This makes picking up new songs from any source a lot easier.
– I have learned to focus on fun! Many times in the past, I quit playing guitar because I was frustrated by what I could NOT do, and that is all I thought about. Now, I try my best to progress, but have a lot more patience. And on the days that I just feel like playing familiar stuff, I just have fun doing that, because I know I will pick up the routine the next day.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
Well, my practice space is in the unfinished basement of our house, so all winter, my “must have” has been a small space heater!
