How many days a week? – The ‘don’t make myself feel bad about myself’ goal is 5 days but I’m usually not happy missing two days. I do M-F at a minimum and almost always the weekends too. I do allow more latitude on my ‘off days’, working less on technique and more exploring new song possibilities or try writing a bit.

What time of day do I play? – In the morning, after the newspaper and coffee, before exercise. Usually in the 9 – 10:30 window. Most days I will play in the afternoon or early evening as well. The morning session is more structured – warm ups, exercises, TAC lesson. Later in the day it is more free flowing.

Where do I play? – Usually I play in the dining room. The chairs are better support and the table is where the laptop usually resides, so if I’m going to be focused, that’s the best. If I’m not using the laptop, and my posterior is begging for a soft landing, I’ll play in the living room.

What was my guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped? – Before TAC I had no set times, no regular playing. Little learning. Little fun. I didn’t feel like a guitar player. Not a feel-good vibe. Having a routine has put me to work. Like some dogs that need to be worked, I need it too. Even on days when I feel off, knowing I’m expecting myself to play, gets me to the table. Invariably, I end up feeling LESS off for following through with it. So following the routine provides some personal good feelings! The routine adds structure to my playing so I don’t just flounder. I have a list of things I intend to do and follow. That structure keeps the skills developing, learning growing, and fun train churning along. The daily aspect is sneaky. A difficult skill that I keep drilling……miraculously, insidiously produces results, muscle memory, skills, and that rolling snowball accumulates fun!

What non guitar item is part of my routine? – I don’t have a thing. I think the timing, the routine is important. If I jump ahead early and get involved with a daily lesson before I’ve enjoyed my coffee and paper, I’m not settled enough. I am not able to focus well on playing. I may do it, but I’m not plugged in, so it proves less satisfying. So for me, carving out the practice time slot if an important part.

    My TACing,

    Jim
