  • Shuttle Run (and other licks and challenges)

As I do these licks and some of the other challenges a second time through as they come around again, I am noticing improvement. I don’t have any definitive measure, but I know there is improvement because I never used to get to the point of actually doing some of these licks. I would put in my 10, 15, or 20 minutes and call that good since I tried. But now I am starting to be able to play some of these trickier licks, etc. although slow, I am playing them in time and clean. Earlier in my acoustic journey I could learn short patterns like a strumming pattern or arpeggios, but to do something like this that had many parts to it (hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides) over a couple measures or more was out of the question. Don’t get me wrong I haven’t suddenly got to where I can do these fast with no trouble, but I do see improvement. I think it really does come from hacking away at these things every day, even if I am not “mastering” them. There’s hope for me yet.

Hey, I’ve heard you play, Nolan, and there is definitely hope for you! No doubt about it! So glad you’re having success with redoing those licks. I haven’t been through a year yet, but looking forward to doing them again.

Thanks folks! Maybe if I had spent as much time trying to do the rope climb in gym class I could have done better at that.
