This is how I TAC
1.) How many days per week do I play?
I try to do 4-6 times per week. Mondays to Thursdays are usually no problem. Fridays to Sundays can sometimes be tricky. I feel a have had a small win if I can manage 1 day out of Friday to Sunday
I start off with the daily lesson. I spend 10-15 minutes on it. I then go to one of the skills courses (thanks for laying that up so nicely for us Tony 😊)
I would then wind down with a song or something familiar that I want to try.
2.) What time of day do I play?
We have 2 young boys, so after they get tucked into bed at around 8pm, it is me and my guitar for the next hour. I can easily pick up my guitar and start to play, it is inside my case right next to my desk where I sit. Sometimes if I have 10-15 minutes spare during the day, I would grab my guitar and have a crack at the daily lesson.
3.) Where do you play?
We have a study/music studio/school room/playroom in our house. I share it with my 2 boys (one is a guitarist and the other a drummer). I have my desk and PC setup there and will already have the PC on in advance. When I enter the room at 8pm I can immediately get to playing, as I mentioned before I just need to slip open my case and my guitar is in hand. I have a few notes stuck up above my PC screen where I can see what I still need to or want to work on. I have found that if I know what to do (lessons, skills, fun song/riff) I get to it and waste no time.
4.) What was my guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you?
To be quite honest, I have always had the routine. When I decided to start with guitar it has always been at 8pm in the evenings. My location has changed a few times before but the time of day and weekly playing sessions have always been there. I made a point from day one to have my guitar in an easy to reach spot to keep the potential for ‘excuses’ and hurdles to the minimum.
What I did struggle with however was what to play. Initially I would play around for 20-30 minutes each day wasting vast amounts of time, only to find something to play. I use to be with a guitar teacher, but I found the ‘syllabus’ very limiting. The songs I played was familiar to me and even songs I liked. I however always felt like I was just learning a song (that particular one for the week) and never really any repeatable skills.
With my current guitar routine, I feel I am learning each and every day. I focus on skills which I can apply to many different musical situations. I feel I ‘get’ songs much quicker than before. I feel more comfortable in taking on new songs and challenges. I have a repeatable process (which is the foundation of what Tony teaches) that I can apply to any song. It is much more relevant now!!!
It sort of like learning a new language. You can learn all the words, correct pronunciation and learning to hear the new sounds. But if you don’t understand the culture and the people who speak the language, you will never really understand the language.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
My Labrador Buddy, his ears have endured many nights of bad playing 🤣
But he has stuck with me, and I’m sure if he could talk, he will tell you that I am not nearly as bad now as what I was at the start
