My Guitar Routine – How I TAC
This may be a repeat, but just in case I didn’t do it already …
1.) How many days per week do you play?
At least 5 sometimes more. Even if I don’t get to the ‘studying’ part – that is TAC Exercises, scales, warmups or whatever I’m working on that week, I at least pick up the guitar and run through a few songs.
2.) What time of day do you play?
My target is between 10AM and noon. Sometimes that doesn’t work because of other commitments, but if so, I try to work something in later in the day. But morning is my best energy time (with the exception of ‘After Midnight’), which is frowned upon by other residents.
3.) Where do you play?
I have a music room – guitars, keyboards, amps etc. etc. Always inspired by my recently built Wall of Guitars, where I have many, but not all, displayed.
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Kind of catch as catch can. I did usually play 3 or more times a week, but mostly when I felt like it. Also – pre-routine was pre goals. I might have been working on learning new songs, but I started to kick things up when I had targets – which was beginning doing regular jams with others, and open mike nights locally.
– Number One – progress. If you don’t play regularly, it’s like restarting a physical workout routine every two weeks. You just keep having to work back up to the level you were the last time you lagged or fell off the wagon.
– New Skills: Outside of the TAC routines, I may decide I want to focus n learning Travis Picking. I find a song that uses that, and work on a combo of general skills and specifics to the song. The only way I’m going to get it is consistency, so I do a little of that specific skill each day, regardless of what else I may work on.
– Achieving Goals: only way I can to that. Right now, I need too have three songs mastered and memorized for Sunday afternoon Open Mike. If I don’t work on those almost every day that week, I’m not going to be prepared to play.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
A good chair. Comfy seat, straight back. Otherwise, I destroy the back I have.
