  • How to use improvisation lessons?

Posted by NW7 on January 1, 2022 at 7:11 am

On improvisation days Tony teaches us a scale. There are also chords on the sheet music. Can or should the chords be used to support the improv? I’ve just been using the specific notes/frets from the scale to try to create melodies.

Also, I’ve noticed that other people on here use frets/notes that are not on the scale as presented in the lesson. I think they must know some theory or have some fretboard knowledge that I don’t have yet to know when it’s appropriate to deviate from the scale as specifically presented in the lesson. Is this related to the chords shown on the lesson sheet?

Finally, is it safe to say that for now I should just keep it simple and create melodies from the scale as specifically presented in the lesson?
