the joys (?) of recording my voice (sometimes yikes!)
Posted by Mrfredsporty on July 4, 2022 at 4:53 amthis week i decided i would record my playing and voice using my ipad. Well, after my first nervousness and cringing at the terrible playing and scariness of my singing, i started trying to be more objective.I need to work on this and that. oh, I need to be smoother etc.Lets see, If I move my capo up a half step on this tune I wont scare the dogs in the neighborhood .The wins are that I was able to hear what I was really like. It also allowed me to experiment with my capo, voice and fingerpicking. Scary, but all in all I’ll call it a win. I will keep making me listen to me and start fine tuning.

I sure can identify on that! Still finding every excuse not to record myself, because I know I will cringe when hearing it. But like you, I’m determined to take the plunge since I believe it will lead to much improvement in my playing and performing abilities. Next step then is to join in on the VOM sessions. It’s encouraging to know many fellow TACers are in the same boat!

Fred/Gerry- (and anybody else reading)-
Right off the bat here— PLEASE remember that this post is from someone who knows NOTHING about how to sing- let alone play and sing.
I seem to sound the worst when I kind-of “half-sing”. Hard to put into words- but you know what I mean.
For me, that’s when I’m in between singing high and low, chest and head, loud and soft, whatever— just kind-of lightly half-singing. There’s nothing good about it: weak, weird, soft….. bad.
So I “asked around”– and was told one thing consistently– “”stop half-assing it- go all out. Not necessarily LOUDER, just “all-in”. THAT is the important part””.
“”The weakness and inconsistency comes directly from “messing with it” as you’re singing””.
He also said- “focus on clear pronunciation. Keeps things cleaner”.
Again– these are not MY thoughts- but they come from someone I think knows what they’re talking about. Just passing them on…..
When I tried singing and recording it the other day- it seemed to give me better results- (a little less bad😉)
Maybe this helps?

Congrats on venturing into the seemingly scary jungles of recording and watching / listening to yourself @Mrfredsporty (and @GerryB56 and @the-old-coach )! 😃.

Although it is uncomfortable at (ie. most) times listening back to myself there are always some great insights to be had!

Feedback, baby!
It’s how performers REALLY find out how they are doing- (and sounding).
It’s the ONLY way athletes can tweak their skills for improvement’s- (or correction’s… sake). Because they can’t see what they’re doing……… while they’re DOING it.
my opinions only-

I can really relate. When people ask me what kind of music I play on guitar I tell them “loud and sloppy”. That usually gets a raised eyebrow or two, so I explain: The song will sound kind of close to the original and you may recognize it. What I lack in skill and finesse on the guitar and vocals I compensate by being loud and drive through the chords! 😂. The result of decades of dabbling! I do have fun though and my aim is that through the TAC method and community I might deliver something with better quality, tone and dynamics.
