Good intro flatpicking song recommendations
Hi! Today I set a 90-day goal to learn 3 complete songs that incorporate a significant amount of flatpicking. I’m looking for ideas for a first one to tackle (my FastStart Milestone 1). I’ve been a TAC member since early spring, playing at least some almost every day. I have pretty strong chord knowledge from way back, at least the traditional shapes near the headstock. Flatpicking is new to me, but my cross-picking is getting stronger.
Any songs you can share that incorporate some nice flatpicking runs/riffs along with chords would be much appreciated. Basic, but I don’t mind a little bit of a challenge. Thanks!!

I’m in the same situation, wanting to learn some good flatpicking tunes for beginners. I assume you’ve already done Tony’s Flatpicking Jumpstart course? I’ve been working on Billy in the Lowground, finding it a good exercise. Searching YouTube I find lots of lessons, but most require subscribing to Truefire or similar programs. Some do offer free trial periods. Wish I could offer more specific help, maybe one of our more veteran TACers will chime in.

“Salt Creek” was recommended to me several times as a good started flatpicking tune. This YouTube video from Alan Barnosky has been a nice one to work on: https://youtu.be/DbHCveDbZas.
“Wildwood Flower” was most recommended. Here is a nice video of Molly Tuttle demonstrating it, with an associated tab sheet. https://youtu.be/sHT4HibXPeA. I’m working on both of those and “Billy in the Lowground”. Slow and steady, but I’m seeing improvement. 🙂

Hi @SciencePete . I was focusing on flat picking over the last 90 days. In the TAC song vault (link: https://app.searchie.io/hub/254V7grV3m/) there are a number of flat picking songs to learn and practice. I also found this YouTube channel which provides bluegrass backing tracks at several different speeds for practicing
