  • 30 Days To Play (again!)

Posted by BobA on October 17, 2022 at 5:48 pm

So here I go again! And I’m really happy to be going again.

I’ve been a TAC member for a couple of years. Played guitar as a kid back in the 60’s, didn’t touch it for about 40 years, and started to play again a few years ago. Somewhere headed towards an intermediate player. Though I’m going to refrain from labeling my level too much.

Then life happened. A major move, a little depression, and a very unhappy guitar sitting in it’s case for the last year. It’s now out of the case, on it’s stand in my practice room, and has been played for a couple of weeks in a row now. I decided to begin again as a day 1 beginner. Even though I can strum a few of my favorites (Ripple) and even finger pick another fav (John Barleycorn), I want it all to stick this time. And I want to have fun at the same time.

So here’s my plan: Complete “30 Days to Play” to develop a daily routine and build back some weak finger muscles and non-existent calluses. I will probably fast forward thru a bit of it. But no more than 2 weeks of lessons in 1 week. Then I’ll hop into the weekly routine and get into a routine of practice and fun play. If all goes well, I’ll tackle the Fretboard Wizard after the holidays. But first, a daily routine with some stronger fingers and calluses!

I’m sharing to say hi once again and definitely open to ideas, feedback, and support. I watched the 90 Day check-in a few weeks ago and that got things started. Here we go! It’s great to be back!

And thank you Tony! I’m grateful. (even though your choice of hockey teams is questionable). 😎

Welcome back to TAC! Boy does your story “resonate” with me (pun intended)! Until I joined TAC some 5 months ago, I really struggled to stay focused and play regularly, and often got so frustrated with the slow pace of my progress that I just forgot to have fun with it. Tony’s system has been a revelation for me, and I know I’ve learned more in the past few months than I did in my first 4 years of this guitar journey. I am certainly enjoying it far more. Your plan seems very well designed, all you need to do is check in daily and commit to that minimum 10 minutes and you’re sailing! And take advantage of these awesome forums, many of us find the cameraderie and support to be a hugely encouraging.

Hi @BobA and welcome back to TAC. Life throws us all some curve balls and knuckle balls – glad you decided to come back to playing guitar. Your plan sounds like a good one!

Hey Bob! I’m right there with you! Pretty much the same story, got my first guitar in the late 60’s and have acquired 5 more along the way but with all the starts and stops that’s about all I have acquired is very unhappy guitars! The difference with me is I don’t have those few go to tunes to strum and pick to help keep me going. Started TAC again a couple of weeks ago and I seem to remember the last time I was on the site there was a spot that you could go to to learn some tunes, but I don’t see that anywhere now am I missing something or is it just gone? Maybe someone on the forum can help me out with that. Anyway hope your journey is fun and successful this time around Bob!

Larry – I’m missing the same song function. I recall as you do that there was a function for learning songs. That seems to be missing these days. Unfortunately, that sends me off to YouTube where I can easily go down the rabbit hole. So for now, I’m sticking to my daily “practice” with TAC for a certain amount of time and then I go to YouTube to learn a song. Maybe not ideal, but it’s working for now. I just have to manage myself when I go down the YouTube hole.

Happy to be on the journey with you!
