New member, not sure how to proceed
I’m a beginner guitar player. I know a few chords and can strum along with some simple songs but want to start right from the beginning. I went thru the 30 days to play primer last week and am starting the Week 1 lesson in the 30 days to play section.
I’ve got questions – I did the ‘Practice Fretting the Blues Shuffle’ this morning, 1/9/23. I played along with the video for 20-30 minutes and was not able to play it thru without mistakes. My fingers are not very nimble and I have trouble stretching my index finger and ring finger between the 2nd and 4th fret without moving my hand. Do I stay on each lesson until I can get it right? When do I move to the next lesson for the week or do I extend the ‘week’ section until I am proficient at all the lessons?

I am pretty new too, just started on 1/2, but I don’t see any other answers yet.
My takeaway (mainly from Tony in the zoom meeting), is that you’re meant to put in the time and do your best, but not let perfection be the enemy of progress, so to speak. I am hearing that eventually, you come around to the same exercises again, and get a chance to see if they are any easier.
For my own part, I have been going over every ‘challenge’ in a specific week in the session with the next one. So like, on Thursday, I will do Thursday, and then go over Mon, Tue, and Wed challenges again. Nothing says to do this, it’s just my own take. I am noticing improvements just in that time.

Welcome to TAC! I’ve been a member for about 8 months now, faithfully logging in every day to try the challenges before working on other interests. Usually I can manage some degree of success at the exercises, sometimes only at a slow pace, but I think it’s more important to try for clean picking or strumming. When I encounter a challenge that just too tough for me, I drop it and move on to other things.
I have found the daily challenges to be a huge help for me in improving my finger dexterity. Even if I don’t see any practical application for some of them for my playing goals, I can see how much they’ve allowed me to progress with hitting the right strings, getting better at skills like hammer-ons and pull-offs, etc.
Of course it depends on what your learning priorities are, but for example if you want to learn songs, you can practice your chord changes using common 3 and 4 chord progressions (like G-D-Em-C, for example). I know my enjoyment increased big time when I finally got to the point where I could do these fairly easily and quickly.
Most of all, you’re doing the right thing by coming here to the forums – I’ve always found there are plenty of fellow TACers who are eager to offer advice and encouragement!

@dbersigyahoo-com , With the daily challenges, just get your 10 minutes in. Its all about showing up. I would recommend the ‘5 days Guitar Routine Challenge’. It will give you a better understanding of what the challenges are all about. Just get into the habit of showing up. You don’t have to be perfect at the challenges, do your best. They come around again and you’ll be how much better you are when they do. good luck.
