I really don’t agree with the learning by ear thing; although I wish I could do it. I think my best approach to learning is knowing the theory that goes along with it, then a piece of music makes sense. I play bass in a for fun rock band. Three of us, guitar, drums and me on bass. The guitar player is a good player but plays by ear, he’s the leader of the band so picks the songs. He can never tell me the key or progression of the song, yet I need to know in order to play bass. I generally watch and follow him. If he knew a little theory and understood the Nashville Number system, it would make my life easier. I find it very frustrating trying to learn a song by ear, but that’s just me.
