  • Improvisation – 5 day routine

Do we go on an exercise until it is perfect? I am on Improvisation – slice and dice (which is in the 5 day routine after the 30 day challenge) and am all over the place with it! I note you have to complete before going on to the next exercise!

No, it doesn’t have to be perfect. That was something I misunderstood when I started as well. Especially when you get to the daily challenges. The goal is to give it a try for at least 10 mins. Some you may be able to get and you spent more time in, others you won’t get at all. After 10 mins mark it has completed and move on. The daily challenges repeat throughout the year so get another chance when your skills have improved.

The approach seems to be to throw you into the deep end and expose you to a lot of different techniques. Over time they start to stick and get easier. I was very frustrated when I first started because they were all so hard, but then had the epiphany that it was ok to suck and just do what I can. Sometimes that is just playing one bar. That’s OK.

So glad I found this! I could only remeber and play the first part. Now I can just move on and stop stressing because I didn’t get it 🙂

You will be surprised how your brain tucks your 10 minutes away and comes back to it next time around. Research shows retention works better with short (say five 10 minute sessions with five 2 minute breaks) than one long (say 60 minute) session. I think that is why it works and it nice to take off the pressure of comparing yourself to where you are than where you think you SHOULD be. Enjoy.

No stressing necessary, whatever you didn’t get will come back around soon!

I usually do keep my practice lessons to short 10 – 20 minutes each session, but I may do that 3 or 4 times a day. or… I might only do the lesson once. I do spend way too much time on the weekends playing guitar just because I enjoy it so much. And what I have learned over the weeks does build up over time. I was fortunate that I know guitar music theory and note location on the fret board fairly well and that has helped me greatly. Like most of us I can say that I am a much better guitar player than I was when I started back in April of this year.
