  • Struggling with power chords

Posted by Roy-Phils on February 26, 2024 at 4:53 am

Hi, I’m on my 3rd day with power chords (30 days to play) and it simply isn’t working; I suspect that these chords are meant for electric guitar, or am I wrong? I’ve tried 3 different acoustics (2 dreadnoughts plus my Baby Martin) and they sound dreadful, like a pair of cats fighting on a thin steel roof. I’ve tried 2-finger as well as the 3-finger method, still a rubbish sound, despite careful muting. Unfortunately my electric amplifier died on me a while ago……that’s on my shopping list. Should I put power chords on hold for now and just move on?

    Hi Roy,

within the context of 30 days to play…move on. The larger question is how to get your power chords working. It does depend on what type of person you are. I am a terrier. For better and worse, when I am faced with something I cant do that I would like to be able to do…I cant let it go until I get it. I wish I had learned early to move on anx revisit after more experience. It may have saved me time. The medium would be to hit your power chords a 5 min session at any point in the day as long as it it everyday. Your consistent effort will be your best friend and the key to your progress, long term. Let’s find the way to keep you engaged with the impossibly challenging tasks while having fun.

Agreed…… I actually pick the guitar up throughout the day, outside of my study period, quickly going over the the previous lessons. Cheers.

I tried power chords during the 30-day challenge and struggled and moved on. I recently had to learn them for another course I’m taking as they are part of an assessment needed to progress in the course. It took me roughly 3 week to be able to play them correctly and consistently. I ended up doing my assessment on my acoustic as I found them easier on it than my electric.

I would say move on. They haven’t really been used in any of the daily challenges I’ve encountered since I’ve joined TAC.
