  • I am afraid of practising bad habits.

Posted by Joyfinder on March 3, 2024 at 7:15 am

Hi Everyone. I am struggling with the challenges, I have yet to play a single one through with the backing track, and what I do in the parts I can do, they never sound like Tony’s even Tony’s slowed down, but then again, my playing is very much novice level. I hear Tony saying to trust the process and I can see that, but at the same time, there is this voice in my head saying just because you practice every day doesn’t necessarily make you better, you can also practice yourself wrong. Doing a technique wrong could result in me cementing a bad habit or incorrectly done technique, that will be hard to break down the road. Any thoughts? I know I’m getting things wrong.

It depends on how much time you are practicing. If you are trying something for 10 mins, giving it your best shot, and then moving on, you are really devoting enough time for it to become a bad habit. If however you spend an hour on it doing it wrong then yes you could be developing bad habits. Typically it’s going to take multiple days of longer practice sessions to commit what you’re doing to your subconscious. Since Tony mixes stuff up everyday the chances of that happening are small.

I’ve been here since June and can rarely play along with Tony and the backing track on Thursdays and Fridays. I’m a little better on the technique, lick, and improv days. Most of time I spend enough time that I can get most of it under my fingers and can feel like I made progress from the beginning of the lesson until the stopping point.

Heather, not to worry as you will find joy by just consistently trying your best. I noticed you just started TAC two months ago. It’s a marathon and not a sprint. When to see this week of lessons again, you will find yourself closer to your own “guitar nirvana”.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have been playing songs for 2 years but only strumming them. I love how this is stretching me and teaching me new skills and techniques, but also a little dismayed thought I’d be doing better than I am.

Don’t let “perfection” get in the way of progress. If you are at it for at least 10 min a day-you are on the way. Trust me, it gets better as you go. I have been around for about four years now, and I continue to get those “wow” moments as something I struggled with back then comes easy now. You got this. Don’t let that inner voice win.
