  • fingers muting other strings

Posted by Deborah P on May 23, 2024 at 11:09 am

Hi I’m feeling very discouraged by my fingers touching the other strings .my finger tips are large but fingers aren’t long enough to use a wider neck the G chord is especially hard to get . I tried moving my palm and still doesn’t help, any suggestions?? I love the TAC program after many years of trying and giving up I’m really getting better and like it I’m afraid I just won’t get these fingers to cooperate!

Everyone struggles with this. Even after I felt like I’ve solved it still occasionally comes back. So I just revert back to the basics, hold the chord, pick each string, make micro-adjustments until each string rings clearly, remove my fretting hand and repeat the process. I devote 5 mins everyday to this practice. (Different chords each day).

Hi @deborahp1010gmail-com ; two things come to mind, one is long a term practice: stretching. Look over in the skills courses and find the course on stretching. It will not increase you finger length but it will improve your spread and speed. Two: this is an immediate fix that will take some time before it becomes intuitive, Move your thumb to the center line of the neck, you will think your fingers have grown two inches and from the guitars perspective they did.

Do not feel alone. I am having the same issue. Right now, I am trying to build up my finger calyces so my fingers do not hurt as much. one string at a time. Now, with this idea, I can get to the top E. I hope this will help to arch my fingers better.

Moose408 and jumpinjeff hit the nail on the head! Two additions:

    1. Make sure the guitar is sitting flat on your leg. I tend to tip it back towards me so I can see the strings. This tip also rotates the frets away from your fingers. Get that guitar flat!

    2. Try a classical guitar. They have wider necks. 😉
