  • buzzing strings, Too low action?

Posted by BarbaraM on July 19, 2024 at 2:00 pm

I bought a used Baby Taylor about a couple of months or so ago, from a man who bought it for his very young daughter, but she wasn’t interested in learning to play. He bought it new from a guitar store, so it had new strings, but it seems the action is very low. It sounded great at first but lately the low strings buzz/twang a lot, like they are hitting the frets near the headstock. I tune it every day just before playing, and it’s usually not far off. It’s been hot and humid lately. Do the strings, especially the wound ones, tend to swell in the heat? Should I have the action raised a bit? Is that possible? I looked at the strings sideways and I can barely see a gap near the headstock but at the 12th fret (where I think they measure it) it’s only 2mm between the top of the fret and the bottom of the low E string.

    Advice, please? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Barbara,

If you’re new to guitar set up i would advise you to take it to a guitar shop where they have staff doing repairs and who’d be able to help you and advise. Could be a simple thing such as adjusting the truss rod, but if the weather has been changing a lot, could be because the wood has contracted/expanded… in any case, best to get someone to look at the guitar as it could be lots of different things
