  • Left Forearm Pain

Posted by Gregr819 on August 13, 2024 at 12:02 pm

I am only on Day 4 of playing, but just 15 minutes of practice the middle of my forearm hurts! I hope this gets better, I’m not looking for sympathy, I would just like to know if anyone out there remembers going through this when they first started. I’m going to get back to my 12-bar week 1 day 1 practice now. I’m still working on getting this right.

Ok, I’m back after 18 minutes. I think my problem is that I’m tilting the guitar towards me too much and too often. That’s so I can watch what strings to fret and strum. I remembered what Tony said about holding the guitar vertical. Thanks, Tony!

@Gregr819 Pain is a warning sign from your body… I’ve learned the hard way, better to listen to it. I’d guess your ergonomics might be suboptimal and you may be on the verge of tendonitis or some type of overuse syndrome. You’re already doing well by asking for advice and adjusting your form. Hope that helps!! If not, you might try taking just one or 2 lessons in person so they can check your posture and form face to face. Also it’s easier to learn and easier on your body if you keep to shorter, more frequent practice sessions. (3 ten minute sessions vs 1 thirty minute session). Don’t forget the ice!!

    Best wishes, Carol

I am also having the forearm pain. I think from being a little tense and from playing for sessions that are too long. (I need to learn to relax and sit up straighter when I play as well.) Look under the ‘Skill Courses’ on the menu on the left of Tac’s main page. Tony has a section on daily stretches in there. I’ve been doing those and they help a lot! I also looked up exercises and stretches on youtube for ‘golfer’s elbow’, because I have some pain on the inside bony knob of my elbow. A lot of the exercises were similar to Tony’s and have been very helpful. Best of luck!
