Marie – Townes Van Zandt cover
Posted by Braden on August 27, 2024 at 12:29 pmHi folks. Here’s my current progress on another TVZ song…one of my favourites. Townes so beautifully wrote about the human condition and this classic covers many of the complexities of homelessness…mental health, lack of services, addiction, lack of accountability for oneself, risk of violence, employability, etc etc…and its also really fun to play. Only two chords …Am, Dm…with some embellishments. Every time I play it it comes out a little differently…lots of mistakes this time but if i waited for a perfect take we’d be waiting a long time! Id never post anything! Another reason i love this community…very friendly (wink wink)…perfection not a requirement. Anyhow merci beaucoup for watching and I hope you like it. B

I think you did a great job. Hammer on a pull off with the pinky ain’t easy. TVZ is one of my favorite artists as also is his best friend Guy Clark. Guys’ wife, Susanna loved him and Guy but Guy found here first.; both of them were wordsmiths extrodinaire(sp?). The story behind the album “My Favorite Picture of You” on YouTube explained that relationship from Guys point of view. You sounded a lot like I do when I’m playing with the unplanned pauses while searching the mind for the lyrics, I have found as you have done that if you can keep them in time it’s like you planned it. Story songs are the hardest, no refrain just lyric after lyric and you have the thumb technique down. Again, great job!

Hey Luther thanks for watching and your comments. Love Guy Clark’s song “The Guitar”…and youre right about songs with lots of verses/lyrics…so easy to get mixed up or draw a blank lol. thanks again for the support..very much appreciated:)

Nice job. Lyrics are slippery. Before you know it they slide out. And there are a lot of them to sneak out.

This is really great! I was not familiar with the name Townes Van Zandt, however, I am pretty sure I heard this before. I am more familiar with the Van Zant brothers of Lynrd Skynrd and 38 Special.
I thought you played this excellently, there were a few minor hesitations which don’t make any difference at all, otherwise clear notes and vocals.
Well done!-
Hi Peter! thanks for watching and your comments…really appreciate it. Spend some time with Townes…huge guitar skills and great songsmith…not completely sure but I think it was Dylan who referred to him as the greatest songwriter of all time, and coming from Bob that it quite the compliment. Steve Earle is also a big fan and has covered many of his tunes. thanks again for watching brother:)

Oh yeah! The TAC community is exposing me to a lot of musicians and broadening my horizon immensely. Such a good thing, I was getting burned out of Spotify feed (seems no matter how I set it up I keep hearing the same songs! I’m gonna be creating a whole new set of playlists based on these artists I hardly know).

I have used Pandora for several years. $3/month and it plays all day. Over time I have created channels of my favorite artists. They play some of those artists and others and as you thumbs up songs they play songs of similar styles. As you build channels, then go to shuffle channels and then artists are added for you and thus I have been exposed to very many I have not ever heard of. I’m 72 so have heard a few. We have a lot of unheard of musicians in Texas people have not heard. No Rap cause you can’t spell *rap without Rap.

Very nicely done. I’m just revisiting some TVZ. Lots of good stuff.

Supercool song and well played Braden! I wasn’t familiar with this and excited as others to dig deeper into this music. Reminded me of some Tom Waits. Rock on and have a great weekend!
