  • Where are the benchmark videos?

Posted by petelanger on September 10, 2024 at 2:26 pm

I’ve wondered why this forum tab is not used. Perhaps nobody wants the community to see where they are at with a benchmark challenge. I’ve made up my mind I’m going to post one of my recordings here this week since it’s benchmark week with Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Having it right here makes it quite convenient to see your own progress down the road when this challenge comes back around.
It will probably be loaded with errors but that’s where I’m at and that’s what benchmarks are for. So I’ll be setting the bar low for myself and any others that dare to follow.

I think you’ll be the one to start the benchmark video movement my friend! 😉 Fantastic!

I think this is a new topic that appeared with the recent web site updates as I don’t recall ever seeing it before.

I’ll admit that I wanted to be really good before posting. I make lots of mistakes. That discourages me.But your right we all need to be jumping in and recording our now videos so we have a personal scale in which to measure our progress later. Plus encouragement from the forum is always welcome.

I totally get it Zebras, I too wanted to get a little bit better before posting. Somehow we don’t want to look like the absolute beginners that we are! Lol!
But is that the point? We would be simply “perfecting” an exercise that represents a work in progress that will unfold over the next couple of years. For some the process will go quickly, for others in may take longer. Let’s embrace the warts and faults in our practice sessions and down the road we can celebrate as we eliminate more and more of our flaws!

After posting my Benchmark videos, which were mainly just recording as I went through the lesson challenge, I am not feeling self conscious about the recordings being out there. I wanted to rehearse and get to some more representable level but looking back it doesn’t matter in the least. This is going to be so freeing for the future benchmarks because I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter one iota! As Tony explains, it isn’t a competition with others. Where you are is where you are and if you keep showing up to do your daily challenges, there will be improvement. Recording it will make it easier to detect slight improvements that you don’t notice because they are small from day to day.

So where is the URL needed to post our mistake ridden videos?

They would go right here in this thread. If you click on that menu item it will take you here.

You still have to load them up to YouTube first and then post the link here in the forum. Actually start a new thread and don’t just put them in this one. Each video should stand on it’s own. At the top here is a button that says “Benchmark Progress”. Press there and then post your link!

Thank you. for solving that riddle for me. I suppose posting to YouTube is okay, since a few billion get posted daily, I won’t humiliate myself. Right?

Oh. Now to figure out how to post to YouTube. Had to ask a younger friend how to record a video on my phone.

It’s very simple: How To Upload YouTube Videos From Phone – Full Guide

You can use the method shown in the video which starts on YouTube.com

or alternatively you can start at your phone by simply selecting the video in your gallery, click on the share icon and then select YouTube as your share method. You will still have to give it a name, make it public, decide if it’s for children or not, add a description and so on.

I posted my first benchmark video, hopefully I can get more up over the next couple of days. I really want to document where I am at.

I am playing on my wife’s Takamine because I just sent my Lava Me Air back to Amazon because it wasn’t setup right. I have to wait for the refund and then I’ll order a replacement. Not sure if I’ll order the same thing. I liked the guitar but I over 3mm action on the 12th fret after nearly every reviewer raved about how perfectly their Lava Me Air was set up from the manufacturer. Lava was good with the support though, very responsive and told me to just go ahead and return it.

This is great, I’m working on my nerve to do this. Thank you for sharing with us and encouraging us to do the same

Hi SeaGypsy. no nerve necessary. What we share here is not finished product but rather how/what we learn, all missed notes, unintended muffle of strings, total brain hiccups, all part of the process. This is the working area. We are the only ones (we, meaning the others also working) who see it. It is the very best of places to explore progress on video. I get past reluctance because the reward is soooo great. it is not the reward of outcome, it is the reward of effort. The effort reward goes a long way.
