  • Help with C chord hammer on

Posted by dld2608gmail-com on March 24, 2025 at 10:09 pm

I’ve become interested in bluegrass music and have been trying to play some licks and fills. When playing an open C chord it’s common to hammer on the 5th string C note. I can not do this. I keep working on it but my middle finger just can’t get the speed or the strength to make the note sound. I know that the problem is my hand position when playing a C chord, but I can’t play a clean C chord without my hand / fingers sweeping toward the headstock. Anyone have any advice? Just as a side note, I’m 67 and my fingers do not move as well as the did 30 years ago when I last played regularly.

I am probably misunderstanding; but with an open C chord; the 5th string (A), C note (fretted on the 3rd fret), would be using the ring finger the way I believe it is usually played; unless you have a different way of fingering it.

By the way; 72 here; I get the challenges with older hands, stiffness, and arthritis.
