I’m working on Neil Youngs Old Man. I love this song, but I’m frustrated by the hammer ons. I’ve had to rework all of my left hand positions on the neck to try to get the open noted to sound clear before the hammer ons. Those strings ring clear when fretted but when they are open they get muted by my other fretted finger placement. I never knew there was a problem before all of the hammer on’s in this song. With the F chord the G string gets muted when open by both my ring finger and my index fretting the B and E. With my C chord the D string gets muted by the ring finger on the A string when open. With all the notes fretted they all ring clear. Nothing I’ve tried has fixed this. I’ve spent about 4 hours between yesterday and today trying to find a solution, but all I’ve gotten were sore fingers.

Maybe try to push your palm up toward the neck – which should twist your wrist a bit such that your hand is more at an angle vs being up and forward. I would imagine fingering the chord like that is putting some pressure on your thumb. I tried to show in a video… I hope it helps. I know we all have our challenges and I am no expert but this is the way I am able to do it. I am not consistent on getting it perfect yet but… at any rate I hope it helps.
