  • Using a pick

Posted by Robert J on May 9, 2025 at 8:22 am

Been playing fingerstyle for years. Average player. Have never used a pick as prefer fingerstyle. So… Just signed up for TAC. Is this course mostly for people who use picks? Do i need to first learn how to use a pick to hit the right strings. Is there a lesson on this?

Or is this course beneficial (improving skills) to those who only want to fingerpick without learning to use a pick. At 77YO, not sure if I want to devote time learning to use a pick.

    Thank you for suggestions.

I was kind of in a similar boat. TAC for sure has made me more comfortable with a pick. I do think you could still do many of the challenges fingerpicking though. However, using a pick has certainly opened up my rhythm guitar playing. I used to just thumb, or finger strum.

I shared your reluctance. Just wrote an essay in response to another thread about what pick to choose that elaborates those thoughts, so won’t repeat them here, but perhaps my comments there might be of some use.

I found the Flatpicking Jumpstart helpful. It is found at the link below. I’ve only been here about six weeks, but did the 30 days course and a couple of the skill builders. I find revisiting even the most basic topics helpful to build confidence and momentum.

As for focus, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the mix of fingerstyle and flatpicking in the challenges. Close to 50/50, or perhaps 40/60 finger/flatpick. In any event, a good variety.

    Many blessings,
    Michael

    same boat….

My breakthrough was having a pick in every pocket. Driving a car, hold a pick. Watching TV, hold a pick. After about 2 months of that the pick didn’t feel like a foreign object to me anymore. Instead it felt more like an extension of my hand

Thank you everyone for the replys and suggestions. And the link to how to use a pick. I just ordered a few sample picks from amazon.

Has anyone used one of these. Looks interesting. Maybe take the place of my fingerstyle thumb pick? And maybe can be used as a regular flat pick??

Don’t know if this link will work?
