Repeat daily challange
Posted by Lena A on June 1, 2025 at 8:55 pmI find that I need to devote at least three days and sometimes five to each daily challenge to reach a comfortable proficiency level in order to attack the next day’s challenge. So what should take me 5 days, takes me a month. I don’t like feeling like I only know 20 percent of something. I need a solid 75% before taking another bite of something new. This approach has put be a full month behind. At this rate, I’ll never finish the year on time. Not really concerned about it, but just wondering if others are in the same boat.

The Daily Challenges are a little over whelming when beginning this journey (at least they were for me). I wouldn’t worry about reaching a certain “proficiency level” before moving on. This program works a little different. Put the time in; at least 10 minutes (I did twice that much at first), but still stopped then. However well I did with that time was my proficiency level at that point. Some lessons I was pleased with; others…….no way. You keep going according to the schedule in TAC, and since the skills practiced each week Monday through Friday, are the same on that day; even though the material is different; you are still developing that skill. Doing this keeps frustration (and the sense of falling behind), away. You are developing according to who you are, at your pace. You will see growth; but not by hammering away at a specific lesson until you are satisfied you have reached a certain level; but by developing the 5 essential skills; chipping away at them each week. You will see progress then, have fun, and avoid discouraging yourself; which causes a lot of people to quit guitar. Some lessons that I could not get down, even to a modest degree the first year, I can play well quite easily now. Take it easy on yourself, enjoy, and play the best you can within a time each day; then move on to the next lesson………no matter what. It works!

The mantra is progress over perfection.
You are expected to be proficient in any daily lesson the first time through. Some will be easy, some I’ve struggled getting through a single measure. Just spend the 10 mins and move on. The lesson will come back around in 9-12 months and the next time you will do better, over time you will be able to do the whole lesson without a struggle. Have patience and don’t strive for perfection.

I started on March 11 and I’m just finishing my first 5 day challenge and although I have spent several days on a specific lesson, I’m still having a great time learning. As a recovering Drummer, my 2025 resolution was to learn guitar this year and I’m doing it. On most days with my “Morning Coffee Anchor” I’m showing up and learning something new and really enjoying it so hang in there and remind yourself that you are learning how to play the guitar.

Do not try to perfect first time through, probably not even the first 5 times through. It should get better with each repeat but “proficiency” is elusive. You will be repeating a similar skill very soon which will help you get better with the one you are struggling with now! Spend 10 – 20 minutes and mark complete!

Hello Pete. I’m a relative newbie (to both TAC and guitar in general), and your comments on the forums are very helpful. I’ve always been a perfectionist, so knowing I don’t have to “get it perfect” the first time through is very encouraging. Thanks for your frequent positive input.
