Stuck
Posted by RoyinSC on July 6, 2025 at 6:31 amOkay, It’s taken me 60 days to complete my 30 day challenge and I have thoroughly enjoyed every day, I wanted to work on several lessons to really get it down. I did the 5 day guitar challenge that took me a week or so and and I took my time to work through my next 6 chords . I working through the Strumming Jumpstart but I noticed that there are no tabs to go with that and tried the daily challenge but it seems really advanced. I also have Fretboard. My question is where should I go next with so many options? I know I really need to work on my chords and chord transitioning but there isn’t any lessons on that. I am enjoying my journey as a recovering Drummer and just want to use TAC in the best way since I have never played guitar before. Thank you for the help.

Personally, I would jump into the daily challenges and just do the best you can. I would also recommend finding a couple of easy songs to play. I’ve seen so many players getting “stuck” when not knowing what to practice next. I say play, and don’t spend so much time practicing. Start adding more songs to just play as you get more chords under your belt. There are literally hundreds of songs with only two or three easy chords. Don’t get me wrong, practice is important, however we picked up this instrument to play. My overall enjoyment and progress came when I started just playing. This was great advice from one of my teachers. He recommended spending about 10% of my time practicing, and 90% of my time playing. Another golden nugget he gave me was, being OK playing poorly. Being OK missing a chord, or transition. Just enjoy playing. Suddenly, you will hit that chord, or chord transition and it will sound like magic. No better feeling in the world.

Thank you for your advice. It’s a relief to know that I don’t have to be perfect. I will begin to look for some songs to play and just have fun with it. Thanks again!

No, no, no! Do not try to perfect any TAC challenges! Perfectionism will kill your love of playing guitar. You are completely equipped to go into the daily challenges and just do what you can. If that’s one line of the TAB, one measure or just learn how to do one or 2 chords. You might not be able to do hardly any of the challenge on some days on Rhythm or Chord Transition Days (Th and Fr) but that’s fine, do the little bit you can and MARK THE CHALLENGE COMPLETE! Then if you still have time go back and review stuff from earlier in the week or maybe past weeks, whatever is fun.
Keep it fun always! It should not be work and perfecting things is definitely work! The sooner you drive away the concept of needing to do a lesson completely or perfectly the better! This will help you enjoy the program and keep coming back every day. Consistency is the important factor. You’ll get better at the skills as time passes because the skills come back around frequently and so do the songs (not as frequently, but the same skills reappear in different challenges)

Thank you for your advice. I’m having fun and it’s good to know that I don’t have to “Wokr so hard at it” It’s learning and having fun that counts. Thanks again!

Don’t worry about the daily challenges being a bit over your head, I felt the same way and I’m know many of us have. Some are more challenging than others, but all have multiple layers for players at different levels. If all you can do is a couple of notes, that’s fine. You’ll get further along next time.

Thank Pete for your help. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one feeling overwhelmed.

Im my opinion the “complete” button is misleading. It should be a “I did my best for 10 minutes (or more)” button.
So do the challenges best you can, click on the button after 10 minutes and be proud of your small daily achievements. Celebrate them. They add up!

Thanks Kristin. I feel the same way and I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’m pressing on!

That’s hilarious and so true. I love the idea of the “Did my best for 10 Minutes” button.

I did my best for as close to ten minutes sometimes… some days I did my best for less!
-
I know what you mean. There are days you just aren’t feelin’ it! Thankfully I’m able to pick up my guitar several times a day, cuz the first time isn’t always my best time.

This is something I also struggle with. I am always behind because I want to understand what I’m doing and be able to do it at least somewhat before moving on. Do you all actually stay caught up every week?
-
Caught up is when you have spent at least 10 earnest minutes on the challenge of the day. Remember, you are not behind! This is your guitar journey, stop comparing yourself with others!
If you can’t get anywhere at all with the daily challenge (it’s totally over your head – and I’ve been there) then back up and play one of the previous challenges, maybe take Monday’s or Tuesday’s a little further or you can go to a previous week. Just do something a little better than the previous time. Make that your little WIN! I’ve called them nuggets in the past. If you look closely you can find nuggets all over the place, it’s a gold rush around here (Neil Young will make an appearance soon enough-lol!)
