  • Guitar Position when playing using classial position

Posted by KevinV on November 29, 2025 at 7:12 am

Play with my right hand and found holding the guitar in the classical position vs. the blues position (horizontal) with guitar using a strap between my legs is most comfortable and not using my right leg

Have tried both legs and found this works best for me.

    Thanks.

I bought a little footstand on Amazon made for classical guitar players. It works well. The problem is that most of the time I end up just sitting in front of my iPad and playing. No accounting for sloth.

Agree, i have a foot stool for my right leg which helps. Been taking private lessons and the instructor suggested the classical position using a strap felt more comfortable

My last teacher tried to get me to play in the classical position. I just couldn’t get comfortable with it. He was classically trained however.

Toying with the idea of hollowing out a portion of my home made foot stool and placing a acoustic style pick up inside and run to an amp for a tapping tone/sound. Idea is in the early stages… I do find the classical position is more comfortable sometimes and do use it when I have a finger stretch that is a little beyond my normal range.

When I started, knowing nothing I gravitated to the classical position (I’m right handed so the guitar on my left leg). But since I wasn’t playing classical I set the guitar on the right leg and it feels more normal now, but I catch myself strumming and picking near the end of the guitar neck when I’m not looking so I have to consciously move my picking hand towards the bridge.
