  • Playing Together OnLine?

    Posted by brian-eastep on December 12, 2025 at 2:02 pm

    I’m looking for advice to trying to play guitars and sing simultaneously with my brother who’s in Maine (I’m in Colorado). Have gone to an Ethernet connection, as WiFi doesn’t cut it, and tried ZOOM (which Didn’t work … keeps cutting one of us out). All I really want to do is play guitar and sing with my brother but, finding it’s not as simple as it sounds. The app’s like SonoBus and Jamulus seem to be more geared to mixing and recording. What (If any) is the best way to just play guitar with my brother online?

    Appreciate any advice.

    @Brian Eastep

    a while back I posted this in the forum. I might be interested in participating with players that are a similar level. I am still a beginner. Reading your profile you would appear to be a lot more advanced.

    One of my teachers lived about 40 minutes away. On days I didn’t want to make the drive, we did online lessons. We could play together without much interruption, and would use Zoom. There were a number of settings we both had to get dialed, or it would cut one person off. It’s been over a year since we did lessons, and I can’t remember all the particular settings. Seems like “original sound for musicians”, and a couple of settings in my “settings” tool on my laptop. Zoom does work if you can figure out the correct settings.

      Skyman,

      Thanks for the reply…

      We spent about and hour messing with Zoom audio settings and found improvements, but never totally tackled problems with it cutting one of us out. Keeping the voice and guitar volumes at audible levels on both sides seemed to fade in and out. Maybe, just need more time messing with it. Was able to play one at a time, but more often than not the signal seemed to collide when we tried to play simultaneously.

    Pete…

    Thanks for the information… I have considered an audio interface and looking closer at the online apps. I wouldn’t mind paying for a premium app if it works. I really don’t want to need a degree in sound engineering to use it, so where to start is something I’m struggling with. If I can get something going with my brother, it would be great to reach out to other musicians as well…
