  • G Chord Finger Positions

Posted by Ted H on January 20, 2026 at 3:27 pm

When strumming (playing) the G chord, I find it much easier to not use my ring finger on the third frett of the B string (leave it open). I have my pinky on the third frett of the high E string , and use my middle finger on the second frett of A string and the ring finger on the third frett of the low E string. Seems to sound very good. Is this acceptable?

That’s the folk G chord, a variation widely used and even taught in the TAC program. You may use whatever works for you. Sometimes you will use that particular shape in order to be able to make certain chord modifications in a daily challenge. It’s almost always feasible to use your preferred shape most of the time.

When I first learned the G, I was taught without using my pinky. I learned it with my ring finger on the high E, third fret.
