I have a relatively short pinky (small guitar hands), but can pretty much handle G-high E. Above that, it is a big and awkward stretch for it. I can do it, but it is so much more fluid to stretch my ring finger to get the note. I know there are a lot of “3 finger” guitarists out there, but at this stage (many many years as a “dabbler” and getting nowhere), do i try and use the pinky on those strings nonetheless?

I think it’s important to keep trying. Your reach will expand, everyone’s does given time and effort.

Not sure what guitar size you’re playing on, my goto is a travel size that is shorter and has a slender neck and body.
