In day 3 of the 5 day guitar routine challenge, Tony specifies what fingers and what frets should be used/played for each note. In the course of playing the “Improvisation” portion of the challenge, I unintentionally happened upon a different way to play a certain section of “Slice and Dice”, making it easier for me to play. I’m not worried about the guitar playing police showing up at my front door, but is there a reason why, at this stage of my journey, that I shouldn’t deviate from what Tony demonstrated. Specifically, I found it easier to play the 7th fret on the 6 string rather than the 2nd fret on the 5th string. They happen to be the same note. I’m not sure if playing it the way he demonstrated is a building block leading to something else.
    I hope I made sense.

I have to split in the middle. On the one hand it is a challenge, giving me the opportunity to stretch and flex the digits in ways they have not moved before. On the other hand finding workarounds is also a skill. In the end economy of motion is the goal for playing, however you settle upon that end is golden. There is no wrong. If you find a way that works now and then as you speed up you find you need a different way you will know how to do that too.

@martyepp I’m with @jumpinjeff to go ahead and do whatever works for you right now. As you move on you will find yourself attempting different ways to approach your playing and the things that seemed hard and didn’t make sense are suddenly doable and make more sense. I will always attempt to do what Tony suggests and then make my own decision. Sometimes I’ll stick with his method, other times I choose another way
