  • Unexpected Fathers Day Surprise

Posted by Skyman911 on June 26, 2026 at 11:58 am

This is kind of a long post. My apologies in advance.

My 29 year old Daughter moved up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to coach a Freeride ski team. She’s thriving there. So, my wife and I drove up for Fathers Day since we hadn’t seen her for a while. However just before we left, she sent me a text asking if I had an extra guitar, and if I could spend some time with her learning some basics. Well, I was pretty surprised as she’s never expressed any desire to try to learn. And I’ve asked a number of times. You can imagine how exited I was.

After spending a few hours throughout the weekend, she caught on pretty quick to some basics. E, Em, A. Worked on C G D as well. Tried to show her a C major scale. That was a bit more difficult for her. I let her try out a couple of guitars, and she settled with my little Martin 0 size to learn on. It’s small and fit her much better.

What really stuck home was, how much we’ve actually learned, and how far we’ve gotten without realizing it. Showing her the basics, and watching her struggle brought me back to when I was first learning and how difficult it actually was. Patience, practice, commitment really does pay off. For anyone new and struggling, don’t give up. You CAN do this. I think the benchmark weeks within TAC can really reinforce this.

She also told us she’d dating a guy who plays guitar. I think now I know the real reason she wanted to learn. And I thought she just wanted to be like dad. 🙂

@Skyman911 that’s exciting news. I am very envious of your daughter for the skiing thing! That would be a dream come true for a 40 year younger me! I was on Ski Patrol in Ontario for a season and I was instructor in Quebec for another season. But free skiing is just the best! My Dad often spoke of going on a heli-skiing trip but it never happened!

It’s got to be heart warming that she wants to learn. Good luck as you help coach her through her guitar journey!

That is a heart encouraging turn of events. I rejoice with you. You have another grappling hook with which to draw closer to your daughter. And you are also right on encouraging others to continue to accumulate small wins in their guitar journeys.

Thanks for sharing. Love this! I was up in Jackson Hole last September. What a spectacular place. Wish I was there right now and out of these 100 degree Texas temperatures!
