Singing and playing together is hard. They are different skills and you have to have at least one of them engrained so it is automatic. It took me 12 months to be able to play and sing a few simple songs. For songs that had complicated rhythm patterns it took me 2 years.

Pete’s suggestion to hum is a good one, it is much easier than singing and helps you develop the right rhythm, after humming it for a few weeks I will then start singing it in my head, and then after another few weeks will sing out loud. It something that you need to practice regularly, just like you practice the guitar.
