I never use Tab unless I can’t figure it out. There are no hard fast rules other than if it is producing results keep doing it. I found relating to it and figuring it out through ear and memory was more difficult but led me faster to being an intuitive player so that I could sit down and play with anyone without knowing or ever having heard what they were playing. That was a goal on the top of my list. The goal has be met and exceeded.
