  • 10 Minutes per Day

This question isn’t about feeling stuck. It’s more about the approach to the daily lessons. I’m on day 34, specifically the 4th day of 5 Day Guitar Routine:

Especially in the the 5 Day portion I am finding it takes about 30 – 40 minutes just to watch, follow along with my guitar to learn the fretting and strumming parts of the exercise. I don’t have a problem with spending that much time per day. But Tony emphasizes “just 10 minutes each day”. There’s no way to complete this in 10 minutes because the LEARN video is 16 minutes long and I have to pause it to grasp what to do, then go through the PLAY portion a few times and you’re at 30 minutes for sure.

Should I stop early on in the process and then continue when this same topic comes back around?

It’s more about a minimum of 10 mins a day. It’s more about being consistent and practicing every day if you can. I think the 10 mins is because everybody can find 10 mins in a day, but if it said just 30 mins or an hour a day, you would put off practicing because you think you don’t have that amount of time.

When you move to daily challenges there will be some where the lesson is shorter and can be completed in 10 mins, there are a lot that are going to be hard and you won’t be able to do and for these the 10 min rule is more applicable. Do your best, spend 10 mins and then move on. Maybe just learn the first measure, maybe just work on the timing, etc. just do what you can and don’t try to perfect it.

Another suggestion based on you mentioning having to stop the video to figure out what Tony is doing. If it’s technique that’s great, if it’s fretting hand placement, you just be using the accompanying TAB to figure out where your fingers go. I always open the TAB at the same time as the video and mainly use the video to learn the timing and picking hand portion.

10 minutes a day is your commitment. If an alien lands in your back yard you will do your 10 minutes. What happens next. Play if you can, play if you want, play for a minute more, play for an hour more, what ever you do you rest assured knowing your playing needs are met and you are in the land of discounts and free gifts (musically speaking).

What we have in TAC is a method to organize, balance, adjust and analyse the results our playing times. It allows for matching our desires and also our development both mental and physical to where we are, while simultaneously taking care of where we need to go. That is the clear direction supplied and cultivated. All that is required is effort.

At a point very early on in my journey, I could not just play for 10 minutes. Over time my sessions extended to hours and even then I had to learn how and when to stop for maximum improvement (also learned here). I was the one who had to do the rearranging. I had to figure out how to make room for this new thing. It was a process. You will find your process. Play as much as you can as often as you can. Find the successful mindsets that advance your comprehension and execution, jettison the ones that set you back. The advantageous mindsets are on display in most of the challenge lessons.

Or the easy answer: you should play an hour …LOL….that is funny right?….I think so.

Thanks @langerking , your question made me a better player today!!!

    Thanks for the replies!

Moose, I am trying to use the TABs (by printing them out) but I am still not real solid in reading them and definitely can’t read them while I’m playing yet, neither printed nor on screen. I really need the video (and preferably at full screen) to be able to see and do. But I’ll take your advice and spend some time to learn to read tabs better. It’s a language and needs to be practiced all by itself.

    JumpinJeff, your viewpoint is helpful!

I’m definitely progressing and can do so much more than when I started not even a month ago (July 3rd). I just know that if I had only given it 10 minutes each day, I definitely wouldn’t be at this point (ready to start the daily challenges next Monday).
