  • a tuner can do this??????

Posted by Mrfredsporty on July 30, 2022 at 4:32 am

I recently got one of those headstock tuners for my guitar. I used it to tune my guitar (imagine that). I really had to use it the most for those skills classes with special tuning. BUT….the major small win I got from it was when I used my capo and then tuned . Son of a gun it helps me learn the notes on the guitar! As I go up and down the guitar with the capo the tuner tells me the notes. I know I know this like a major DUH! but if you have not realized it before it becomes quite a learning tool and thus a neat small win for me.

I learned all the notes on the fretboard by using them like counting sheep to relax and go [back] to sleep.

I started at the head stock from 6th to 1st string. At first I recalled only major scale frets (2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 12th). Later after those were comfortable I added those in between.

Then later I began to mentally do all 7 notes singly all over the fretboard (starting with a root (say A, then the 3rd, C, then the 5th, E). Then use the fifth, E to act as the new root… then 3rd, G… then 5th, B. Etc. Etc. I not only learned the notes that way but the chordal relationships and the Nashville numbering system. I never did it as a learning session or with the guitar. I just did it mentally as a prelude to rest or when I was doing a repetitive task like weeding. In about a month or two I had the fretboard memorized and never felt like it was real work.

Kudos to you for sharing your tuner learning tool idea.

Wow. I doubt I could do that but is an extremely interesting idea that I may try although sometimes I’m lucky to remember my own name.

@Mrfredsporty thanks for sharing your small win – a big win in my book of discovery! @albert_d thanks for sharing your experience and use of the tuner for note learning experience. I’ve been playing along and suddenly noticed from the corner of my eye “oh the tuner is still in – better shut that off” – the old noggin just didn’t take that lateral leap! 😃
