Dirk’s Song
Dirk’s Song is a traditional American folk song that has been sung and played in many ways by many. Mary Flower has a unique way of playing it; finger picking, using open D tuning, and leaving a lot of space when playing it, and spacing for the lyrics. There is no chorus, just verses with a musical passage between the verses. The lyrics are good, tell a story; but I cannot sing well, so only did one verse and played the passage between them. My finger picking is similar to hers, but does not follow it exactly.
Historical Note: In 1909 ethnomusicologist John Lomax recorded an African American woman called Dink singing it as she washed her husband’s clothes in a tent camp of migratory levee-builders on a river a few miles from Houston.
