  • Finished ‘Find The Key By Ear’- what do I do with that info?

Posted by IowaDave on July 13, 2024 at 1:40 pm

Haven’t read a lot of discussions in the forums, but am hoping that people are helpful instead of ridiculing-
I finished the ‘Learn To Find The Key By Ear’ lesson in the Fretboard Wizzard a couple days ago and it was very helpful- I’ve tried it on several songs and have been able to figure out what key the song is in.
My question that Tony didn’t really discuss in that lesson is, what do I do with that information now that I know the key of the song? I assume/hope it will be discussed in a future lesson, but are there a certain block of chords that are usually/always used when a song is in certain key?
    Thanks in advance!

If you know the key of a song then you know what scale to use for improvising or soloing to the song.

That makes sense for soloing/improvising- thanks!
So, is finding the key to a song more for that, or will it also let you know what block of chords will most likely be used in a song? At this point of my journey, I’m more focused on strumming chords along with songs than I am about soloing/improvising.
      Thanks again!

Are you up to the point of learning the Nashville Number System? Once you access those lessons, the key information will make more sense in creating the song’s chords. Also, a handy tool to use is the Circle of Fifth’s…but everything ties back to knowing the song’s key. Eventually, this information is useful in creating your own solo’s, song writing, using the CAGED system, etc. Hopefully, this information helps you. Fretboard Wizard is amazing once you understand the knowledge that is in it. Good luck!

I haven’t got that far into the lessons yet. I figured that learning the key of the song was a foundation for something to come in the future, but just wasn’t sure what that was. Thanks for explaining!
I’ll keep working my way thru the lessons and I’m sure it will all make sense and come together at some point. 🙂

You are on the right path. Once you know the key you will learn to anticipate the chords that will likely follow. I have found that I don’t need to memorize chords in a song so much as knowing the key gives me and idea of which chords will be in the “package”. And transposing is also much easier.
