Guitar suggestions?
Posted by nelsonb12 on April 7, 2021 at 9:39 amHello fellow TACers. I’m looking into my next guitar purchase and I really want a small bodied (0, parlor) 12 fret guitar with a solid top for under $600. Any suggestions? I’ve been looking at the recording king 11 series dirty 30s model. Has anyone played one? Opinions? Thanks in advance.

Hi @nelsonb12 , in that price range I would look on reverb for Breedlove and Alvarez. Look for used, your money goes further and you get more guitar. Be mindful that a set up will/may be necessary but that is true with even new guitars. Have fun hunting! Don’t forget your local Criagslist market as well. Sometimes good deals are there too. Less frequently but every now and then you can find a golden crumb.

The Breedlove is an excellent suggestion! My Son’s all solid organic series companion came in at under $600 after adding a gig-bag, tuner and capo into the mix!
If you, @nelsonb12 are looking for excellent quality with a modern sound in a small guitar in that price range, I second this!

I own a Gretsch Jim Dandy, which I love. it is small boxy comfy. action is high enough to play slide, low enough to finger pick. It came goldie loxed like that.
As far as tone, it is boxy and a bit basey, it sounds a bit better than a cheap old guitar (which I found myself disappointed that it didn’t sound worse… just no pleasing some people).
If I had it to do again, I would still purchase a Jim Dandy, or Maybe a Gin Rickey because of that dirty sounding pickup it comes with…. But hey I can add a toaster pickup to it, and I am only in about $200-$300 on the guitar!
As for the “nicer” guitars that go along these lines… They probably would sound way too nice for me to feel like I was playing an old catalog Stella from the 30’s. I’d be sad… I love my Gretsch.

Hey @nelsonb12 – Yes, I own the Recording King Series 11 parlor. Love her (call her Beulah). Two thumbs up from me!

Martin has the X-Series Special with a sitka spruce top. They sound really nice, and are within your budget. If you shop around you can get them for about $550.

In your price range is a PRS P20 and P20E

I saw those Stan. They look really nice, just wish they were 12 fret

I’m looking at the Alvarez AP66SHB. Has anyone played one of these? I own an Alvarez AD60 and absolutely love it so i know that Alvarez makes good quality budget friendly guitarts.

i played an AP66 at the guitar store but I just felt more comfortable with th AF77CE-OO. It is on the smaller size but bigger than a Parlor. Also considered a Seagull S-6 with a Cedar top but it was pretty beaten up

You might want to check out Orangewood Guitars online. Got a solid spruce topped, mahogany backed parlor for under $200. Very impressed with quality at that price point.
