  • How I TAC: My Guitar Routine – Lori.MT

Posted by Lori.MT on April 30, 2021 at 7:51 am

1.) How many days per week do you play?

I have committed to 5 days, which been consistent for months. (Only exception surgery week). In usually get 7 days in, and longer sessions on my days off.

2.) What time of day do you play?

I play early (5-6) in the morning, before work. This was a deliberate, conscious commitment to myself and my guitar routine to make it a priority by putting it first. I pour my first cup of coffee and go straight to my guitar zone. (And no, I don’t wake up looking like the pic 😁, it’s bedhead and sweats.)

    3.) Where do you play?

I play in my guitar spot in my living room, sitting on the fireplace hearth or on my guitar stool next to it. I face the picture windows so I can look out and watch the dawn and then the sun hit the mountains. It inspires me and brings gratitude.

4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).

Before I had a routine, I struggled with sitting down to play and wasting time looking for what to play. Or I played through songs I already knew, which did keep them in my memory. I picked up new songs fairly quickly, with mostly the same chords I already knew, and learned a few new chords and techniques, but I didn’t feel like a guitar player.

Now, I am consistently playing and improving and I feel like a guitarist. I am now transferring techniques to the songs I play. I caught myself applying a strumming technique we had worked on a couple weeks before to a song I was learning automatically. It just came naturally out of my fingers. Amazing.I’m more focused when I sit down and know exactly what I want to work on. No more wasted time with my guitar in hand. Celebrating my progress everyday is building confidence and making it more fun and multiplying the joy, which is absolutely why I play.

5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?

Coffee!!! It is between 5 and 6 am after all! I start my day with two simple pleasures: a great cup of coffee and guitar.
