How I TAC – Take 2
(my first post seems to have disappeared, trying again!)
1.) How many days per week do you play?
I have dedicated 5 days per week to practice (Mon-Fri), an hour each session. I usually get in bonus practice on weekends.
2.) What time of day do you play?
I play after dinner, instead of watching TV.
3. Where do you play?
Wherever I am (see pic)! We have an RV and try to get out as often as possible. The beautiful thing about acoustic guitar is I can play almost anytime/anywhere! But, when I am home, I have an office/recording studio and I practice there.
4. What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Before I had a consistent routine I would watch various how-to videos on YouTube, read/listen to Hal Leonard books, etc. I would learn a new chord or start working on a song. But, I wasn’t really progressing. After applying a routine to my practice:
- I started building core, foundational skills. I started working through exercises which strengthened my fingers and brain (like going to guitar gym) and started to see progress.
- Similar to making dental hygiene a habit, having a dedicated guitar practice routine has made guitar more of a habit. I don’t have to plan for it or thing about it, I already have a solid routine. As an aspiring song-writer, I am now more able to get ideas out of my head through the guitar
- Adopting Tony’s view of the guitar (and music in general) as an ‘epic journey’ has helped me to frame things in my mind in such a way that this is, pretty much, fun! I know where I was 2 years ago when I started guitar and TAC. I know where I’m at now. I know where I want to go next and I have the tools to get there and enjoy the JOURNEY.
5.) Bonus Question: what is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
My iPad. When I started TAC I got an iPad with cellular. I use this to watch and work through TAC exercises, skills, and daily challenges. So long as I have either cellular or wifi service, I am able to get online and work through TAC.
Guitar Geeks Unite (and hope to see you all at ALF 2022!)
