I’ll Fly Away
Posted by Philb on November 12, 2025 at 9:50 pmThis is based on a finger style version (in drop D tuning), by Mary Flower. “I’ll Fly Away” was written in 1929 by Albert E Brumley, inspired by “The Prisoner’s Song”, from 1924. It has been recorded by many. I ran it through a small acoustic amp with some delay on it (for those who care to know). It is a beautiful melody with lyrics of a journey yet to come. Out of kindness, this is instrumental.

Thank you!

That is fantastic!!! We play this song in our strumming group, but your fingerstyle playing would really put it over the top! Thank you for sharing.

Thank you! How many people in your group do you play with?

Hi Phil! I am lucky to play with 2 casual jam groups. One is a group of up to 10 or so, co-ed, started out as beginner strummers and has morphed to include some really stellar players who perform solos and add flat pick melodies. Pretty awesome stuff! My other group, who play “I’ll fly away” is all ladies, some ukes and some guitars, 1 uke bass. Up to 8 of us. Playing with others has been such a joy!

Nice! Would like to get something regular with a group set up too.

That sounds awesome. I have not had that experience yet, except with a couple of friends on a rare occasion. Enjoy!

Thank you both for listening and the kind words.
