  • Just getting started, question

    Hi there, new here,

I started this program a few days ago and finished the intro and the three week-1 videos for the 30 days to play. It was a little challenging but I caught on. I have dabbled on the guitar for a long time but never really put much effort into it. I know a handful of chords and strumming patterns but never attempted picking, or tried to learn any other skills or techniques. I also play the ukulele, and getting used to using a pick has been interesting because I strum with my fingers even when playing the guitar.

My question is; would it be unwise to move ahead before week-2 starts? I haven’t mastered the week-1 bits, and I understand that mastery isn’t the priority, but I can play the licks albeit slowly, and still make my fair share of mistakes. Should I practice them over for the next four days, or would it be ok to start the next week early? I don’t intend to move too fast through the program, but I also want to keep the momentum going as long as I can, and I worry that a four-day break will derail my squirrel brain. I have taken lessons before and the space between sessions was too much.

I am so excited to be here though! I played a lot in middle and high school, but then I let a boy convince me I wasn’t that good, so I put the guitar up. 20 years later I got rid of the boy and fell in love with playing again. Now I want to get better at it.

It is fine to move on. The philosophy is forward progress over perfection. So if you are motivated to move on then go with it. Consistency in your practice schedule is the important thing. Try to play for at least 10 mins every day if you can.

Moose is right on. I’ll just add that whatever you jump into you can always back off if it is to far beyond you skill level.
