  • Learning to read Tab

    Posted by JennyMc on March 28, 2022 at 9:43 am

    Greetings from Ottawa Canada. I have gone through most of the 30 Day Challenge and am almost through the extra chords (stuck on the F chords). I have seen the tab pages and Tony has referred to them, however, I don’t really know how to read them. Did I miss something? Was there a tutorial somewhere that taught this? Thanks.

    @JennyMc

    Greetings, and welcome to TAC
    I don’t believe there is a specific course within TAC designed to teach tab reading. Within the lessons, Tony will point out what fingers to use and on what string and fret (which is in harmony with what is on the tab), so you can learn it according to each lesson, but I know that may be confusing if you aren’t familiar with it at all. Here is a web page with an overview.

    @JennyMc , in the 30 Days to Play Primer course, the 3rd section is ‘Learn to Read Tablature’. It’s short and simple. Go back and take a look at it. 1) Tune your Guitar, 2) Learn the 4 Technique “Check-ins”, 3) Learn to Read Tablature and 4) Learn How to Read Chord Diagrams. I did look at the link @Philb sent and it does go into a little more detail, so that should be a help too. Good Luck. Once you figure it out you’ll never forget it.

      Many thanks @Philb and @Cadgirl. I will go back and see if I can find that section and have found that page re how to read tabs.
