  • Monday Challenges

I’ve been here for a little bit. But I am still frustrated. The “Monday Challenge is done quickly, usually longer and I can not keep up. So when I get to the Tuesday challenge where they we build off of the Monday challenge I’m not two steps behind. The small win at this point is trying. just showing up. I’ve managed to get the first bar of Fast Car but that’s about it. I am not winning here. Please send suggestions. Thanks

    Hi Mave,

If I understand you correctly, Tony is explaining things too fast for you to wrap your head around…? Or the play-along is too fast…? Both of those can be helped by slowing down the playback speed (lower right hand corner of video, hover and a little list shows up with 1x checked, but you can go up for slower speeds– .5, .75, or down for faster speeds, but for the video it does make Tony sound a little drunk). You can also repeat the video parts you have trouble with by sliding back the little ball on the progress line. If you already know this, sorry! I don’t know what you know.

Did you do the 30 Days to Play, so you know what the tab means and all that? Then all I can say is to stick with it, go slowly, give yourself some grace as a beginner. We were all beginners at some point. I’m 74, into my 3rd year, and feel I lost most of my first year due to frustrations of various kinds. I learned to be patient with myself.

You will get this, do not despair!

Hi Barbara, Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t thought of slowing down the lesson. I was so busy trying to follow him that I just got frustrated. Add to it I absoutely love this song and so want to play it well. Although, the Monday lessons do go a little fast for my brain to catch up with. I will try the lesson again at a slower speed and see if I can follow along better. I’m knee deep into this (since mid October ’25 and have not gotten a Monday yet.) Of course, I am new to this, so there’s that.

      Thanks again,

      Mave

Oh but you are winning! These are not easy challenges @Mave, I would say Fast Car is among the toughest of the year. Getting the first measure is absolutely a win. You must not expect perfection, that will kill your joy of playing guitar faster than anything!

It’s in the struggle where your brain is working behind the scenes, you don’t realize how much you are learning as you think you’re banging your head into a wall!

Some weeks will feel easier than others, that’s where you venture further in and try to to go deeper through the layers of the lesson. When it’s more difficult just focus on getting a small portion down. You will see growth as long as you show up regularly and play the challenge for at least 10 minutes, mark complete regardless of how far you got!
